Valerian is not a tranquilizer. It will not dull a horse’s performance or inhibit their ability to learn. In fact it will enhance their ability to learn while keeping them safer to work with. Horses don’t think well under pressure and they don’t think at all when they are scared!
I learned a lot of hard lessons before introducing Tim to Valerian. The Biggie, NEVER Put Your Horse Between You and a Scary Object! That fiasco landed me face first in the dirt after Tim tackled me and then used me as a jump!
That was it for me! Either Tim was going to relax and stop acting so dangerously, or he was going to have to find himself a new home! By the way, I was already Tim’s 5th owner in 4 years. Well, luckily for both of us the Valerian worked. Not only did he calm down and start acting like a sane horse, but he turned into one of the most trustworthy horses I have ever been around. He was eventually weaned off of the Valerian and only got a low dose in the beginning when I started using him for therapy class. Tim went on to be my trusty Trail and Dressage Horse as well as a much loved Therapeutic Riding Mount for the Handicapped and remained true to the day he died.
